Hospital Termal Rainha D. Amélia: A Spa's Uncertain Future

The abandoned thermal hospital that once attracted royalty and the elite to its healing waters.

The Hospital Termal Rainha D. Amélia in Caldas da Rainha was once one of the most prestigious thermal spas in Europe. Founded in 1485 by Queen Leonor, who believed in the healing properties of the local sulfurous waters, the hospital grew over centuries into an elaborate complex of treatment facilities and grand pavilions. Today, much of the complex stands vacant, awaiting a new purpose. The ornate facades and overgrown gardens tell the story of a golden age of thermal tourism that has faded, leaving behind a hauntingly beautiful reminder of past grandeur.
