The Quinta da Regaleira is perhaps the most mysterious of Sintra's many palaces and estates. Built in the early 20th century by Italian architect Luigi Manini for the wealthy businessman António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, the property is filled with symbols related to alchemy, Masonry, and the Knights Templar. The famous Initiation Well descends 27 meters into the earth, connected by underground tunnels to grottoes and lakes.
